In Response To: Mantle: do want? (scarab) a sort of Prime Directive. But the Halo universe, to me, seems a little more hostile. I don't know how much the FR "tampered" with natural growth of life in the galaxy, but I got more of an impression that it was the Forerunner way of protecting life from the hostile influences that they've become aware exist perhaps from outside the galaxy, and as a sort of reluctant mission with the fact that they are/were super-powerful if not the most powerful, civilization in the galaxy. Would anyone else be able to handle "the mantle" successfully? (presuming arrogantly that they were able to, of course) If the mantle was passed to them from the previous super-civilization, then it could be something they felt would need to be passed down to what they felt would be the next great civilization after they fell. And if the only "intelligent" life in the galaxy (which it seems is implied through all the EU) are Forerunner, Human, and the species comprising the Covenant, then they felt that Humans should be the next best to take up the mantle. tl;dr:
