Though from what you said in the second paragraph it would seem that exploring that same old antagonism is really the only way to go, if I follow correctly? Anyways, from some things mentioned here and there in the canon and in a couple of Bungie weekly updates I was always under the impression that the Sangheili were undergoing some sort of Renaissance around the time period of the trilogy. Truth's actions in Halo 2 made sense to me in that context.
