If I may answer this quickly (and yes, this is 100% my opinion as a Christian), it's not really a "thread" of Christianity that thinks that. Salvation through God's grace is one of the main tenets of Christianity itself. To be a Christian means that you believe that we cannot save ourselves, and that we need to trust in Jesus for our salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." That's pretty clear that our works do not save us. But this doesn't discourage good works, on the contrary, the result of being saved by grace should in fact result in a change in our desires, motivations, and behavior. Now back to your regularly scheduled Halo discussion.
