In Response To: Mantle: do want? (scarab) Prime Directive meets Arthur C. Clarke's monoliths, with a splash of the Endangered Species Act. Basic understanding and potential to rise to the responsibility of 'upholding' it is incorporated into all Precursor-designed beings on an instinctual level. The Forerunners misinterpreted the Mantle as it was written out for them, much as many people claim the Bible has been misinterpreted today, not knowing that the simple truths of it were self-evident. In my opinion, mankind certainly does appear to be threatening the peace that the Mantle works to uphold. Which is what make's the Didact's actions logical. But then, knowing ourselves and knowing the potential we have, the Librarian's stance also makes sense, that we might overcome our issues and rise to the responsibility we have to life, rather than to ourselves. So the Librarian represents the hope that we can overcome our nature, the Didact represents the premise that we cannot, and are therefore a threat to the flourishing of intellectual diversity throughout the galaxy. So, that's a resounding "do want!". Otherwise, we're just as good as cavemen fighting with warring clans, just with big guns, suits, and spaceships.
