In Response To: Mothergoat's Second Opinion of Halo 2 (mothergoat) I definitely appreciate the time you put into writing this, and I agree with you on many points. However, there are some things that I simply don't agree with. You say that most of Halo 1's MP levels are better in design than those of Halo 2. I have to flat-out disagree with this. I found most of Halo 1 MP maps to be dull, boring, uninteresting. There were only two maps that supported vehicles, which was a big piss-off to me since the ability to drive vehicles was one of the greatest features in Halo, I felt. I do, however, agree with your assessment of the single player levels. I two felt claustrophobic on many levels, and there seem to be less places to just "walk around and enjoy the view" in Halo 2. There were, however, some points in Halo 2's campaign that simply blew me away, far more so than anything in Halo 1. And while the graphical pop-in is annoying, it only happens during cinematics and does not affect gameplay in any way. I'd take that over loading screens before every level any day. As for the weapons, I do agree with you that rather than dumbing-down the good ones the others should have been made more powerful. I am happy that the scope was removed from the pistol, however, and that the rifle now has one. That just makes sense. The battle rifle definitely kicks the old assault rifle's hiney. The shotgun is a specialty weapon now, only used for certain circumstances, and while I don't mind it, I do miss the power of the old one. As for the bullet-spray effect, I agree that it takes a certain amount of skill out of the game, but it's my observation that experienced players will always take a battle rifle/grenade combo over dual SMG's. The fact that you start with the SMG in multiplayer is a big bummer, but at least you can change that for custom games and system link (which is what I play most of anyway). And, yes, while the grenade's blast radius is reduced, all this means is that that beloved skill that you miss from Halo 1's pistol can be applied here. Learn how to bounce a grenade accurately and have it blow up in someone's face. I hate how grenades in Halo 1 didn't blow up unless they were on the ground. Also, the way grenades will blow up in midair if another grenade goes off near them is awesome. In short, while I do agree Halo 2's gameplay has changed over the first, for me it is actually more fun. The lack of new vehicles is disappointing, especially some sort of vehicle other then the hog/spectre that more than one person can ride on. Still, I can remember how I felt with Halo 1, and I how I longed for certain features that have now been included in Halo 2. Bungie didn't improve everything, but the things they improved, for me, overshadow the things that were worsened. |
