In Response To: Mothergoat's Second Opinion of Halo 2 (mothergoat) But hey, that's what forums are all about, right? To let us talk about our opinions. I think the things that were changed are hard to get used to only because we obsessed so much over Halo 1. It's a different game. Give it some time, and open your mind. Or don't. Doesn't matter. I know what I say won't make you give it another chance, and I know I won't change your mind. If, in one year, you still feel that way, fine. That's your opinion. But you just got the game. It was going to be different, and you knew it. You had years to prepare. Now give it a chance... It is NOT Halo 1. It was never GOING to be Halo 1. You grew to love Halo's quirks, oddities, feel, and unbalances because that's all you had. You are now so nostalgic you don't want to accept any changes to any gameplay elements. Bungie fixed stuff because it WAS broke. They changed things not for no reason, but because they WERE unbalanced. To use an example from your post: Bungie made it so grenades didn't affect vehicles so much because the vehicles are destructable now. They're already fragile, yet fast, means of transportation... They don't need to blow high in the sky like a kid on a freaking trampoline anymore. That would make them nigh-useless. See? It's all about balance. Grenades were overpowered in Halo 1. He could throw them too far, and they did too much damage. So they toned them down. Same thing with rockets. They became more anti-vehicles than anti-personelle. These things were all done to tweak the balance of the game. The physics values were tweaked for a reason. I get the feeling you don't disagree with the reasons for most of these tweaks; I get the feeling you simply can't stand that anything was changed in that regard. Now, I'm not going to say I agree with all of Bungie's decisions. I don't. I think some of the choices they made change the game in ways I'm not happy about. However, my complaints are all minor gripes. The storyline is a bit rambling. The ending left much to be desired. But the environments were beautifully designed. The gameplay, though linear, just like most of Halo 1, is basically the same. To say Halo 2 is generally worse than Halo 1 when so many gameplay elements are unchanged seems (to me) to indicate you merely dislike change for change's sake. You're entitled to that opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. Halo 1 was masterful. Halo 2 is an opus. Not quite as grand as I expected, but it is simply stunning, and beautifully balanced. I'm quite disappointed that so many disagree. That's my two cents. --MikeMan |
