In Response To: Mothergoat's Second Opinion of Halo 2 (mothergoat) I predict that your third opinion, when you get over the newness of it, will be more positive, and that your fourth opinion will be more positive still. Physics - they are pretty close to the original, though not quite identical. I have no opinion which is better. Pistol - jeez, people need to grow up and move on. The Halo 1 pistol was a well-known game design flaw that Bungie has been kicking itself over for years. It didn't reward skill. It rewarded camping. "Bullet hoses" - a favorite expression of yours, I think intended to show disdain - you spawn with a weapon that doesn't stand well on its own, in part, so that you will have incentive to move around and find more stuff. SMGs are fine as part of a dual-wield combo, or, ditch it for a battle rifle. Incidentally, battle rifles are like Halo 1 pistols, only better. (Except, you have to move to find them; sorry, campers.) Weapons, in general - I'd say that, on the whole, they are better and more varied. I find it curious that the human weapons appear to use 2004 tech (other than the gauss cannon, which uses high-tech, though it basically is the same to lower-tech solid projectiles we have today). However, this isn't a big flaw. The battle rifle is great, and tons of fun. The Covenant carbine is similar. The energy sword is fun (but ought to charge down in multiplayer as it does in the campaign). The shotgun now, appropriately, does little damage outside of close range. The pistol is a handy sidearm and nothing more, as it should be. Plasma rifles are weaker, but pretty strong in dual-wield situations. Needlers are beefed up a bit, though still on the weak end of the spectrum. The rocket launcher, I agree, is a bit weaker, due to smaller explosions. Grenades - I love frag grenades in Halo 1. In lan parties (I'm the best in our local group), I found that others would fixate on plasma grenades, because they would have success sticking them on newbies. However, good players can often avoid getting stuck, and if the grenade misses, it's easy to see and get clear. Frag grenades, though, are hard to see. I loved using those to flush people out of camp/snipe locations, or to soften an enemy up before then killing him in a mismatched firefight. I can't do that as well now, since the blast radius is smaller and weaker. Oh well, can't have everything. Vehicles - hmm, I don't want to say anything impolite, but I have trouble seeing where you're coming from. The vehicles are much more varied and much better. The hijack feature is also a great balance feature and adds a new dimension. There are a lot more vehicles available, the damage feature is a nice touch, and hijacking means that vehicles are powerful but still have weaknesses that can be exploited. Maps - I think the new maps are great. Much better than the original game. I do wish there were more. I've posted before that I think Bungie could have made the original maps available with about a week of development time, and I wish they'd done so. However, on the whole, the new maps are better than the old ones. Campaign - I think if you actually were to go back and play all the way through Halo 1, and then return and play through Halo 2, you would feel differently. Many tend to elevate Halo 1 in their memories beyond what reality was. The Halo 2 campaign is about equal, maybe a bit better, IMO. |
