In Response To: Re: Reaction to Mothergoat and others (Mothergoat) definitely...thanks for keeping it reasonable and well put. MG's post really made me consider that little voice in the back of my head that wouldn't shut up about feeling vaguely let down. Here's what it boils down to for me right now (subject to change)...in H1 I LOVED the levels. I loved the open ended huge spaces that I could tackle anyway I wanted...and while the vista's in H2 are amazing and the backdrops breathtaking, once I played it all the way through I was disturbed by how *cramped* the gameplay felt. Tweaks to weapons, vehicles, jump height, etc. don't really bother me but this sense of freedom was why I still (until 23 days ago that is) played H1 SP 3 yrs later. Mulitplayer is a different animal and I simply can't seem to stop playing Live H2...it rocks sooo hard my teeth hurt. But to give an example of the H1 vs H2 level thing... H1 - In AOTCR the last bridge before the pyramid...I'm fighting my way from rock to rock, barely alive with one red health bar and half shields...I dodge away from the hunters and have a sudden thought..."hey that pyramid ridge isn't too far away and it leads all the way to the ground. I wonder..." just that quick I jumped off a HALF MILE cliff and prayed...I landed with my shields all the way down and gulped, sure that I was dead. But no...there I was on a knifes edge ridge in the middle of an alien landscape praying that the monsters behind me wouldn't know where I went, carefully turned around and inched down to the valley floor to rest and clean up the urine stain from my seat... H2 - Legendary first play through on the first Earthside level (I can't remember what it's called). The Sgt. has just taken off in the Pelican and dropped off additional troops..we make our way over the broken road turn two corners and sudenly the entire troop goes down from sniper fire. Holy shit! Rinse, repeat 17 (i counted) times. On the 17th I finally get all the snipers before they get me...or so I thought. My last remaining trooper ventures out only to be sniped by a Jackel hidden on the roof up and to my right...Damn! but at least I know where he is and my compatriots sacrifice won't be in vain. I spot the invisible Elite, snipe him and then start trying to figure out how to get to the Jackel sniper...hmm, crossing the street is suicide, but there is a couple boxes and a ledge and look, there looks to be a low rooftop where I could work my way around behind him...thats it! Lets try...except that when I try to make it to the roof BAM!, invisible wall. Folks, that was the single worst thing that ever happened to me playing either Halo 1 or 2. I'm several levels past that now but I keep running into versions of this and it's kinda bringing me down. -madman |
