In Response To: Mothergoat's Second Opinion of Halo 2 (mothergoat) While I agree with pretty much everything in your post (not a review, got it) I have to say that all of it would have been easily forgiven if the story had been compelling. Why did the Prophet attack Earth and then bail like a punk? Why didn't any other fleets simply slipspace to his aid? Why am I cutting the cables on this installation? Why am I stuck trying to dispatch every enemy in the room when it is clear that my objective is to stop an escape? Why am I holdind a courtyard instead of proceeding to the objective point? Why do I keep hearing "Feed me Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors in my head? Halo 1 was great because the objectives tended to make sense. Sure there were lapses, but they were the exception. Why am I heading over to the lifeboats as quickly as possible, able to skip encounters to get the job done? Easy, I've got Marines in trouble. It makes sense. Compounding the problem, Bungie gave us tastes of what looked to be an excellent, and more importantly, an immersive story line with what little info they allowed out. The E3 single-player demo, the ilovebees.com ARG, and the frenzied marketing blitz showed us all what we wanted to see; The Covies are coming, the Covies are coming! Of course now we all know the real scoop. Oddly enough, Bungie is still using footage from the missing New Mombassa cutscene in their commercials, pitting a poorly armed Master Chief against a Covenant Elite, fresh from a pod, sword in tow. Betcha can't stick it? Looks like Cortana won that bet. As far as the multiplayer is concerned, all the weapon balance that we heard about was nothing but fluff. As Mothergoat pointed out, spawning with a single SMG is a bit like spawning with no pants, you better run and find a pair, or you're gonna get worked. The Battle Rifle is equally underpowered and only seems to work well when you can use it from a distance, preferably when your target is getting peppered by another player. Perhaps if they would have stuck with the single-shot zoom and upped the damage in such a mode, the BR could have been a formidable weapon to weild, but as it is, it becomes a midrange backup at best, doting out three-shot bursts that only serve to light up your opponent's shields so you get a better look at him as he unloads his plasma/SMG into your face. Or better yet, maybe he'll just impale you on the tip of his n00bstick, the plasma sword. When Bungie talks about leveling the playing field, they most likely are talking about this bad boy. Even the most underskilled players can rack up the kills if they have any reflexes whatsoever. Point, click, repeat. I'm far from a great player, but several times on Rumble Pit, I have gone on extended killing sprees by simply running around like a jackass and pulling trigger whenever it turns red. Balanced? Nope. Fair? Nope. Equalizing? Hmmmm. Whether or Bungie was rushed makes no difference to me. I still had to shell out fifty of my hard earned dollars for the game and while I'm not completely dissatisfied with the finished product, I think it is abundantly clear that Bungie didn't put out the game they intended to. If you don't believe me, check out the E3 demo again. Bungie says it didn't fit into the game as well as they had hoped, and I agree with them. In fact, that's the problem. The game they made was far below the bar they set when they unleashed that demo upon their salivating fans. Somebody call a medic. |
