In Response To: Re: (correction) (Cody Miller) : Finally. Thank you for correcting yourself, because you are right in that you : can't deny that someone has to write all those branches and account for : player choice. They certainly had to write that story, but because of the : burdens that having the player pick the path put on you, the resulting : story is not going to be anywhere near the calibre of a traditional one, : for reasons I described, but were not refuted and consequently ignored by : everyone here. I wouldn't say ignored. Let's go back to gaming maturing. I would say that drama did not mature until Shakespeare. When I first began to understand Shakespeare, I was stunned. The layers of meaning, the richness of his work just boggled the mind. It's why people can write entire books about his minor characters. I think I've already conceded this much, but it will take a similar genius to pull off the kind of game I can imagine. Perhaps this person hasn't been born yet. She will be a storyteller, and a master of the medium in part because her view of what is possible will be much more expansive than yours. She will see her audience the way all great artists see their audience--as collaborators. And she will stay several steps ahead of them, wherever they go. I hope I get to play the game she develops.
