In Response To: Re: Cody Miller: No story in my entertainment plea (Hawaiian Pig) : Do you realize that this flies in the face of your old "Video games can : never tell a story" argument? : You just successfully demonstrated that a medium need not only function in
I knew someone was going to ask this, and I have an answer. What is film? Film is a series of moving images. When you make a film, your goal is to create a compelling series of images. Notice how that doesn't necessarily mean it has to have a story. Most films use images to tell stories, since it's a really good medium to do that in. But you can still have a compelling film without one. What is a video game? A series of rules you interact with. When you make a game, your goal is to create compelling interaction. Story is the opposite of interaction, so the more story you have, the less compelling your interaction. Making a film without story does not dilute the medium's essence. Making a game with a story does.
