In Response To: Re: The theory that makes me love it: (Dagoonite) : This is part of why the Greg Bear books annoy me so much. I keep trying to : read Cryptum, but I keep having to toss it aside. If you're not going to : give me some level of characterization that I can honestly care about, : then at least don't insult me with levels of science fantasy that make me : want to read Zen and the Art of Going to the Lavatory out loud and posting : it to youtube in revenge. : Breathe. It's just a book. He's probably just going off on what he's told.
You can't predict what a flesh unit in one of those books will do next, They are inhabited by collections of personalities who have any number of motivations for what actions the unit may perform in the future. We don't yet know how many individuals inhabit each flesh unit, we don't know any of them well enough to reliably predict what that individual may or may not do, and we don't know enough about the relationships between the individuals that cohabit a body to reliably predict what the flesh unit would or would not do. How can we say what behavior is or is not plausible? On top of that we add a geas that overrides any belief or position held by any and all of the individuals sharing a fleas unit. So the flesh units can go anywhere or do anything and we have to just say, "OK I guess this is what they are doing now". Its hard for us to know what the characters do or do not know. In any situation we can suddenly find that an inner spirit knows something because it knew it in its past life. We just have to accept what we are told. These aren't people as I know them. They are just sources of exposition, pawns that the author moves around as he sees fit. I hope that none of this leaks over into any characters in Halo 4. Though that is a forlorn hope as even Didact has at least two imprints in Bornstellar's ex-body.
