In Response To: Re: Cody Miller: No story in my entertainment plea (Cody Miller) : What is a video game? A series of rules you interact with. When you make a : game, your goal is to create compelling interaction. Story is the opposite : of interaction, so the more story you have, the less compelling your : interaction. Uhh... no, narration would be more accurately the opposite of interaction. Story isn't by definition a one way expression. Story is composed of anything that allows a progression of elements from point A to point B that ultimately form a greater experience or expression determined by the storyteller. Narration would be presentation of something that comes from a particular source at any time. Interaction would be the process of allowing dynamic alteration to whatever comes from its source. So I would say narration is counter to interaction.
So I can understand your position that a 'game' shouldn't have moments of non-interaction, because it's no longer gameplay. If a game has story, it has to remain interactive; but it sounds like you believe a story can't be interactive. But I think what you mean is narrative can't be interactive, and to me that makes more sense with the state of gaming these days relying on cinematics to tell the bulk of their stories rather than through interaction and gameplay. I think story can certainly exist in a game without explicit narrative. But I don't rant against games that employ narrative elements and take me out of "gameplay" to consume the story. :P
