In Response To: Re: Cody Miller: No story in my entertainment plea (thebruce0) : So you're basically telling any storyteller that they are NOT a storyteller, : or at least that they suck at it, if they create a 'story' that is : flexible and non-linear, even though they create multiple paths, EACH : telling a story the storyteller wants to tell, but allowing the : reader/player to choose their own path. : Your definition of story (how many times have I started a sentence like that
I feel like I am repeating myself. How can you craft a story, where events affect a character, when you can make those character's choices? What if you asked someone: Okay, so do you want to take Ilsa to America, or do you want to let her go with Laslo? Let's say they choose to go with her. Everything up until that point is RUINED. Okay, so do you want to go back into the matrix to save morpheus, or do you want to pull the plug? Let's say they choose to pull the plug. Everything up until that point is RUINED. Okay, so do you want to kill Fredo or do you want to let him live? Let's say they let him live. Everything up until that point is RUINED. In a good story, every event, every piece of dialogue is so perfectly orchestrated that things can only play out in one way! Otherwise they were not important to begin with. Stories are not real life. Powerful stories have important events - events which shape the characters such that they cannot act another way based on their background, and what's happened to them up to that point. You can't simply write a huge story with every branch accounted for, because every time you have a branch, what you are saying is that none of the events preceding mattered at all in the scheme of this world, since there are many ways the story can go, instead of having the events definitely affect the characters. That is bad, and again, why every single choose your own adventure or branching story narrative based on choice has been terrible WITHOUT EXCEPTION TO THIS DAY.
