This is sort of what I was getting at, why is it that moving pictures can be compelling, but a set of rules governing interactions cannot be? Your premise that user interaction is diametrically opposed to storytelling never made sense to me. For example, why can't you create a strict set of rules that guide the player through your story by persuading their choices? Or why not create a set of compelling stories that differ based on choices? I'll agree that it hasn't been done as well as it could be yet, but I don't think the medium is incapable.
