Disclaimer: Haven't seen the film yet, but I've read about it and spoken with several folks about it. I think part of the cause for people's reactions to it is because of marketing and expectations. There was the whole "IS IT XENOMORPHS OR NOT" thing for so long. Scott was cagey about it, which is smart from a marketing perspective. However, in this case, it only gave us cause to build our hopes up and create (arguably unfair, but also arguably fair) expectations for the film. Whenever I ask somebody "If it hadn't of been Ridley Scott, and if xenomorphs hadn't been involved at all, would it have just been a decent summer sci-fi movie?" So far, the response has been "...Well, maybe, yeah." 'course, I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here, supporting a more quiet opinion that I may or may not OH CRAP WHY AM I NOT LURKING?!
