In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain)
Like many, I too have mixed feelings playing Halo 2. However, I think Halo 2 is a substantial improvement over Halo. Why? One word -- strategy.
## D I F F I C U L T Y ##
I for one enjoy SP more than MP. My problem with Halo was Legendary became too easy. I've heard many people on this thread complain about the difficulty of Legendary. I welcome and love that change. You need to carefully watch for snipers, take into account how, when and why a vehicle will quickly get torn to shreds. And think oh so hard about which weapons you'll be taking where, and why. All of which requires turning up the strategy.
Honestly, I wish it was MORE difficult, or there was an Epic difficulty beyond Legendary. Improvements there would be less strength and number of opponents, but more devious strategies by enemies. More flanking, hit-and-run tactics, stealth, etc, etc. Then again you'll need to invest some heavy AI development time to get there.
However, I do feel the Chief's shield is a little underpowered on Legendary. I do agree he could use a boost to take so much extra abuse, considering it seems even lowly blue elites match your shield strength. No wonder humanity is losing.
## E N V I R O N M E N T S ##
The landscapes, lighting, textures, ambient sounds and most dramatically the architecture is a vastly more in-depth and complex. It feels as if all the original Halo models could fit into a single Halo 2 level. It's fun to simply run around and gawk at stuff when not getting hammered.
Okay, beauty isn't strategy. But having thousands of new places to hide, ways to either directly enter combat or sneak around is strategy. Someone mentioned "how many times can you drive a tank over a bridge". Many, if instead you find ways to jack Covenant Wraiths and Banshees, or simply hide in shadows and plasma grenade hit-and-run, or sniper from half a mile away, or any number of other paths.
## V E H I C L E S ##
I never liked human vehicles being immortal in Halo, or Covenant vehicles suddenly exploding. Once again, no strategy there. Now you pay incrementally for risks you take.
## A I & A L L I E S ##
Vast improvement over Halo here. Which once again adds all the more to strategy. Covenant flank, elites seem to fight in packs, rotating out those with low shields. Etc, etc. In addition, I love being able to swap our allies' weapons. It adds a whole new strategy. I often find myself equipping allies with better weapons to meet their situation, and that's a whole new world of fun. Nothing like busting your marines out on the Covenant home world, stacking them up with needlers and carbines when they break out with plasma pistols, thinking about what is best for them to have considering who they fight and what weapons you'll carry.
## S T O R Y ##
Not a strategy issue, but perhaps the novels ruin too much. Apart from the cliffhanger ending (you either love or hate it), a big part of what has made their games so great is rich stories with a nearly mystical feel. Marathon had that -- a strange connection with the character you play. Switching back and forth from MC to the Arbiter did kill some of that, but does open up the game play more. As for making another Halo the centerpiece of Halo 2, you probably love or hate that. I can't blame them for giving up on a full assault on Earth. I used to wonder how could humanity fight back when the earth has been nuked into a creamy paste inside of five minutes by a superior force.
