In Response To: Re: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *lon (FriendlyFire) : This is the one thing that I actually have contention with. The presence of
That's similar to how I felt. When me and my friend were first playing it a day early (the tenth) due to the it being posted early to his house, we both thought it was some weird glitch getting to play as an Elite. but when I discovered it was real I was pretty dissatisfied with it. I refused to play anymore, and I didn't open Halo till the Friday despite receiving on the Thursday. This twist, and the fact I couldn't tell what the Covenant were saying, especially the Brutes, and not finding any instructions in the Halo manual to turn subtitles on, left me with a sour taste. It was only after discovering there were subtitles thanks to an e-mail from Louis I played, on my own through the campaign and this time understood why I was playing as an Elite this time, and along with the local Elite buddies I actually grew to like it, but did want to go back to the Master Chief and Cortana. One other thing I didn't like was the fact that Cortana popped in and out of you more times than if she was doing the hokey kokey. In the original Halo she only left you once, and I had the exact same thoughts about how I missed her being away from me, as the Master Chief did, as stated in The Flood, by Dietz. This time when Cortana wanted to be left behind I thought, "well ok, screw you then", which is something I never would have thought in the first Halo. Also her quirks seemed forced rather than natural, almost like she was trying to be funny but wasn't. On the last level (where I had really grown to really like Arbiter at this point especially as a character, and even wished he could be human), Sgt Johnson insults him in telling to move, I actually felt hatred for Johnson, which is the only bad feeling I've ever felt for Johnson, and now I'm not as appreciative of him as I was, thought the "light bulb" comment helped to smooth things over a bit. I had read a couple of reviews where it didn't give any plotlines away but it did say the ending was disappointing and left the player on an anti-climax. My reaction to this was, "stupid magazines, there not satisfied with anything!" When I finally got to the ending, I was waiting for something really big and answering a few questions, (while trying to put aside the annoying feeling I had, when no one had taken up the monitor's offer of seeing the relevant data regarding the firing of the Halos, and the Forerunner extinction), when the Chief appeared and said he was saving Earth. I thought hold, on a sec, this was the fifteenth level, I thought it was supposed to finish after this not create a last fight, "Ah well I was never one to walk away from a fight being the Master Chief, lets kick some Covenant asses." *Cue final credits*
My opinion hasn't changed that much unfortunately, I think what Duncain said really hit the mark, the game ended when he, (and me for that matter) thought it would begin. As Count Zero said it was nearly as good as Halo, and that is certainly not a bad thing. I think the main things that disappointed me were; 1) Not saving the Earth as much the ads suggested. 2) Not being given the answers to many questions and issues I had, while creating a lot more, 3) The lack of finality that had been suggested, 4) The fact that the faq said it was the Master Chief all the way, yet introducing another character to play as, 5) The lack of organisation that the project seemed to have, which led to many important story elements and game play aspects being scrapped. 6) The hints that suggested that Bungie is looking to do a different kind project after Halo 2 and finally 7) I still haven’t worked out what the secret, which was so big, it would change the universe for ever. Don't get me wrong I love Halo 2 but it just doesn't seem to have the J’nai se quoi that Halo had. MC vince
