In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain)
Halo 2 isn't a bad game. However, when I first played through the game, there were five MAJOR things that I felt Bungie really dropped the ball with:
1. Arbiter -- I don't have any sympathy for the Covenant, nor am I interested in the inner workings of their collective. I play Halo because I'm the Chief, and I'm whooping the hell out of the Covenant. In Halo 2, I felt like they're trying to gain sympathy for the very race that we're defending ourselves from and trying to annihilate. I would have liked to have played as the Chief the whole way through.
2. The Flood -- An interesting plot twist in the first Halo, but no one really liked playing against them. Overpowering (in most cases), and unintelligent, they simply swarm you to take you out (not to mention the fact that you're Arbiter during some of the fights you wage against them). They're simply not fun to play against, and I think they should have been left out.
3. The Library -- So they did what I never thought they'd do. They brought back the Library, but instead of opening up several doors, they're pistons now. And hey, you're fighting the Flood. As the Arbiter. Wow...The first three things on my list come together. Huge mistake on Bungie's part, as I see it.
4. The ending -- Good lord. I was quite upset. We beat the game as the Arbiter, with the help of one of the Monitors (I can't remember his name at this point. Was it 343, or the other one?), and also with the help of Sarge. Now, Sarge is a badass; I just think that he should have been helping out the Chief. The actual ending made me mad, too. We should have wasted less time as Arbiter and spent more time as the Chief actually "ending this war," instead of waiting for the next game (which I think there will be).
5. The levels -- Some of them are good, but one of the things I loved about the original Halo was how linear it was. We had set objectives, and we knew where we were going. It didn't take several hours to complete a level, and we would repeat that thirty seconds of fun over and over again. Now, that thirty second of fun is spread out over massively huge levels, and it's much too sparse to keep me interested and happy. The story's intriguing, I suppose you could say, but not enough to keep me wanting to play.
Well, that's about it for this rant. Like I said, it's not a bad game, I just felt that there were things Bungie really messed up on. You're welcome to flame, if you want. Disagree or agree, it's up to you.
