In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain) I have to agree with a lot of things that were said. I constantly want to go back and have that feeling that the levels in Halo 2 are like Halo 1's. I want so badly for the environments to be these open places that I can just explore and have fun in for 1000 hours like I did with Halo 1's. They just aren't though and never will be. Something else I've noticed is that the voices are VERY poorly done for Master Chief and Cortana. This really hurts the game in my opinion. Cortana moreso since Master Chief has never really said much even in Halo 1. In Halo 2 he says even less really and Cortana...what happened there? Listen every time she talks...in the first game she was somebody who helped push the story along and said at least somewhat insightful things that really made you feel like you wanted her there and you didn't mind her talking all the time. In Halo 2, almost EVERY SINGLE TIME she talks, she says something really short and it always has some "turn-around" one-liner after it that's not even funny really. They tried too hard to make her a character instead of having character, like she did in the first Halo. Now she doesn't even do anything except tells jokes really. No plot advancement from her whatsoever, you're just shuttled off to the next area without even knowing how you got there really. I have to say, I actually liked the story more in Halo 2 this time and the presentation of it. Maybe that's because I started going to church a lot in the time between Halo 1 and 2. The religious angles of it I can relate to and I enjoyed seeing the structure of the Covenant explained more, it's only going to help Halo 3 really in my opinion. I also enjoyed seeing that the Covenant Elite weren't just some stupid alien race that wanted to destoy humans for no reason. Halo 1 didn't dive into the meaning behind the Covenant much at all, so they just felt like a bunch of dumb aliens that you were supposed to shoot. Also, the other "alien" angles left me caring about them since it seems you both have a similar objective now. I also have to agree that they hurt some of the weapons. The Needler simply isn't as fun and the shotgun is a bit of a letdown. It just doesn't have the right "feel" anymore. I used to love just holding down the trigger and blasting people with the shotgun, now I don't even want to pick it up half the time. Most of the maps are wide-open and it's not as good of a weapon (online) really. What else? I feel the game could have benefitted from another level on Earth as well. After New Mombasa I suppose. Something that was more open and an environment that we all could relate to. I really didn't enjoy the "other" levels. Most of the alien stuff wasn't too exciting, although there were some amazing uses of art. For the most part, it's just all, run through this section...then run through the next. I dunno. Maybe I was too much of a Halo 1 fan. Halo 2 could have turned out A LOT worse. Remember Metal Gear Solid 2? *shudders* They did a good job for having to live up to the hype, but overall I guess I'm still a bit disappointed. I long for more maps online too, I'm already starting to grow weary of most of them. Still, overall it's one of the best games ever made. I gave it a 9.8 when I reviewed it personally. I hope Halo 3 is a tighter game though and more like Halo 1. Let's refine it a bit and not go overboard next time around. =)
