In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain)
First up, WE LOVE YOU DUCAIN!!! It'd be like us trying to ostracize Frogblast... not happenin'.
: The thing that hooked me on the first Halo was the campaign gameplay. I
: really cannot guess how many times I've played that game all the way
: through. Even today, it's still a blast. And, since I'm not really much of
: a 'gamer' (Halo was my very first console experience), it's difficult for
: me to nail down what parts of the game make it so great. All I know is
: that for a couple of years I've enjoyed the heck out that thing.
-I agree 100%. Halo just fit. It just worked. Why? (Details, details) and one absolute fact- it was Bungie, through and through. I think that the final rush to polish off Halo 2's campaign made it uncomfortably non-Bungie. More on this below.
: Here's a few thoughts from a guy who simply loves Halo: First , to me at
: least, this entire game (I'm talking storyline here) seems like an
: unecessary parenthesis in the whole story.
-Isn't that what the middle child in a series always is? The Alpha and Omega of the games really contain everything you need, and the middle is exposition. Halo 2 is a sidestep into the mind of the Covenant, and gives you reason to care all the more about the events that will transpire in Halo 3. Personally, I think it turns out to be a wonderful setup. Sort of, when Halo 3 comes out, you can play Halo 1 and 3 in a session and gets lots of MC kicking ass, and Halo 2 is the "now for something completely different" intermission.
: When the
: game was coming to a close (you don't know that at the time), my brother
: and I thought, "Alright, we're finally gonna go to earth and kick
: some alien bootius maximus. Then the credits rolled.
-I just have to say, isn't this exactly how the middle is always supposed to leave you? It's Empire Strikes Back all over again. "WTF!?!?!? I wanted to see Vader get his ass kicked! I can't wait for Ep3! (or... 6... whatever...)
: I'll be honest, my gut react was: anger, and dissappointment. Ya, it's just a
: game, blah blah. But remember we're talking about a game that thousands of
: people lined up for, shivering in the middle of the night for the chance
: to play before anyone else.
-"LUKE LOST HIS HAND!? HAN IS FROZEN!? THAT'S THE BIG ENDING!?" ... "NEO'S UNCONCIOUS!? WHAT!?" ;) I thought this was a genius, super-risky move by Bungie. Kudos for having the balls to go through with it.
: This game seems to be chock full of skulls, eggs, easily escapeable
: boundaries, warthog launching made so easy that my three year old could do
: it, sword flying, and...
-You have to remember, you played for five hours trying to... wait, nevermind. ;) When people say this, it's sort of like saying you built a new kind of basketball court and your're disappointed that Michael Jordan plays so well on it. The community has a LOT of experience getting things to happen. If not for all that experience, we'd probably be lucky to have even discovered Warthog Jumping in Halo 2 by now.
: However, Halo 2 truly does not have the same replay value for me. I want it
: to , but it just doesn't. Even when I do have some free time, which has
: been kinda rare lately, I find myself thinking about cranking up the Halo
: box, and then thinking, "Na."
-Campaign, I can kind of agree with. There's a few bits I love to replay (Outskirts -> the Scarab, primarily). I could screw around in Multi all day, though.
: After playing Halo 2 all the way through, I'm just not drawn in. I find
: myself wanting to fire up Halo 1 and do a nice runthrough of T&R on
: Legendary for fun's sake.
-Agreed. But that WAS Halo. It's home. So familiar and comfortable... plus, it's not like Halo is any less fun to go back and play. Halo 2 was so focused on getting across the Covenant perspective- and it succeeded quite admirably given circumstances- that going back to MCs Big Adventure is something everyone will always want to do.

: Let me just say that the game is good- I liked it. But, it's not a game that
: I could spend countless hours playing through again and again. Sry. What's
: my point in all this? Well, I guess just to vent. I don't do it very much,
: so this'll probably do me for a few years.
-Venting rules.
: Oh yeah! XBL on Halo 2 absolutely ROCKS!!!! I mean, WOW! That's probably
: going to be where my true enjoyment of this game occurs.
-Best. Live. Game. EVER. Live on Halo 2 will definately last until Halo 3...
: In addition, I enjoy the Halo community every bit as much (if not more) that
: the games themselves, so I plan on continuing to be annoyingly involved,
: no matter my immediate feelings about the new game.
-Same here.

: I think the crux of the matter (boy doesn't that sound intelligent), is that
: I was actually standing in line on November the 9th, waiting to pick up
: what I now realize will be Halo 3.
: I just got the wrong game, lol. ;)
-As said, I see this as a genius and ballsy move on Bungie's part. They never intended to make that game, and only through circumstance is that game even going to happen. I respectfully submit, however, that Halo 3 will go back to MCs perspective (hopefully only his), and that if that segment of the game had been in Halo 2, no one would be whining about Halo 2. And I think Bungie knew that, and still chose to finish the game. Hats off to Bungie.
