In Response To: Re: I was wondering about that... (bluerunner) : Totally agree. I love invasion because it opens up an opportunity to tell a : story while playing competitively. Objectives have a meaningful purpose. : Rather than just planting a bomb or capturing a territory on an arbitrary : spot on the map, I'm doing it to advance on my mission, or I'm defending : it because that's my mission. : I'm really hoping they expand on invasion in Halo 4. I've been meaning to do
Invasion is by far my favorite playlist in Reach. I think the maps it has are good. What's not good is that there are only 3 of them. Seriously, invasion is not broken, its just boring because its stagnate. The HBO vs HBO matches we have with invasion are FANTASTIC. Even if the teams are a little unbalanced, and even if both teams can't get past the first phase its still a lot of fun because both teams are coordinating against each other. BUT, as fun as they are, I'm bored with Spire and BoneYard, and BreakPoint doesn't come up a lot. I like going into invasion with HBO guys and playing randoms, but its BORING, BORING to stop them in the first round when its easy. You almost want to LET them cap the first objective just so you can keep playing. In general, I find a second Phase stop MORE satisfying than a first phase stop. Now, if the other team is bringing their A-game and you have to fight tooth and nail for the first phase and you stop them, that's different. I RARELY get those moments out side of HBO vs HBO. When I sit back and look at it objectively, I don't think that a symmetrical map can work, at least I haven't seen one that works. Invasion by nature, calls for asymmetrical maps. Look back to Halo 2 and Zanzibar, I think its pretty clear that map is a precursor to current invasion. It was one of the first maps to have some interactivity with the environment with the gate and the fan. Same thing with Highground and the gate. I would love to see those maps ported over and re-done with Invasion settings. I'm going to be negative about it here and say that I honestly don't think we'll see invasion in Halo 4. Maybe we'll see it in spirit, or a refined or changed setup, but that would really surprise me. Invasion is a game type that arguably And as was pointed out before, when the other team gets skunked (or maybe does really well) it can cause the other team to just quit the game when the defenders and offense switch sides. That really pisses me off sometimes, when and opponent (or my team) just flat out DENIES me the chance to even try! Lame! I would like to suggest some kind of compromise in the scoring system. Something points based where the defenders score points for various means of defense and the offense still sores the traditional points if they meet the various objectives. I don't have a lot of time to go into explicit detail, but it could be something like a on a territory phase giving the defenders a few points for how much time they had left in a territory, or a successful bomb disarmament (even if the opposition detonated the bomb, if your team disarmed it once before you get some points), or maybe a few vehicle kills or something. Basically, if you want to see whats in my head, think of how scoring is done in Left4Dead. The humans can get the most points based on how far they get, and a bonus if they actually make it to the safe room. (I think there is another one but I can't remember it atm). The infected don't score as many points in that initial round, but they DO earn bonus points for the quicker they disable the humans( or how many) and they get a bonus for overall damage they deal to the survivors.
What would you guys think of that kind of system, and how could it be applied to Halo and specifically Invasion?
