A : game is a piece of craftsmanship. A game designer is a craftsman; a : programmer is a craftsman. No, I don't agree fully on the above point. Craft can be considered skilled art, a form of art in itself. Craft refers to skill or proficiency. Craft can be taught. The techniques used by artists can be taught, this is then craft. Perhaps as much or more than 90% of the making of art is really craft. Art, on the other hand, cannot be taught. It is the alteration or the addition to craft. The creative part of a work that is unique. What makes it stand out from other works that are similar to it. Not all literary pieces can be called a work of art, only the ones that stand out. A painting that is simply the copy of another painting using the same techniques is not art but craft. Only painting that are unique from the creativity of its creator would be art. Is a photograph art? Some are considered art, others not. Is a video game art? Yes and no, some of the first of their kind were works of art, IMHO. The first Zelda games, before anyone else did anything like them. Perhaps the original Halo was a work of art. Certainly, I could say that the vast majority of video games have nothing or not enough uniqueness to them to be more than finely crafted. Art is in the creativity and the inspiration of creativity. Craft is in the methods and the proficiency in those methods. Art and craft are not separate, they work together to create the final product. : Just because Halo 2 isn't a piece of art doesn't diminish how great you may : find it.
