In Response To: Craftsmanship (mad.max [subnova]) Art is expression. When one expresses oneself through whatever it is they do, then its art. Otherwise, I agree, its craft. When a smith makes a sword, its craft. But when a smith makes a katana after hundreds of hours of work, putting detail and touches into the handle, folding the metal many times over, etching expressive kanji into the blade, its art. If I write a forum post, its a craft. when I write a chapter in a book I'm writing, its art. If a cook makes a meal, its his craft. But when a cook creates a masterpiece multi-course meal of unique design and with his own unique blend of styles and recipes, its art. When a game designer creates a normal generic game, its craft. But when the game deisgner crafts each part uniquely, with love and care, developing each part with intense passion, each member of the creative team putting their own elements into it to create a singular masterpiece, the game becomes art. That's my view on the matter at least. The intensity, the love, the passion, and the expression put into creating something makes it art. In that respect, I do believe games can be art forms.
