In Response To: Re: Is a rose by any other name... (Wado SG)

: Well that's your opinion, isn't it. I think you disrespect artists that
: create because they feel inspired to do so. An artist creates because he
: or she want to, it is a very personal accomplishment. An artist that
: merely wants to please others will not be happy as you can never please
: everyone all the time. An artist can only be happy if they are pleased
: with their own work.

What if a someone has set out to please another person, and choses art as a means to do it? They then become an artist for a time, and create a peice of art, but to be happy they need not appreciate their own work, for they cater to their friend's tastes.

: My concern is not with artificial labels of what is or isn't called art. The
: nature of art is that is takes creativity to create it. Art is not the
: cookie created from a cookie cutter, it is the life that the baker puts
: into it with sugar sprinkles and frosting. Art is an extension of the
: artist, it is very personal. Giving some of yourself and sharing it with
: others.

But is the cookie cutter itself not a peice of art? Is it not artful and wise to create something with and artful shape that has the ability to grow in greatness? Are the cookie-cutter cookies not artful in that they are an extension of the art that was the cookie-cutter? Would they not remain artful, yet only less so than the cutter? Only less so than the hand crafted cookie, but still art in full?

: People that spend years studying art so that they can become better have a
: mark of greatness because they aren't complacent to just be as good as
: they are. They inspire themselves to be better and they inspire others
: too. No critic can take that away fromt them. But it is very personal and
: a critic's words can hurt deeply in the inside.

Only a fool of an artist would let his tools hurt him. The critic is the artists greatest tool of improvement, for it is the simplest machine with which to expand perspectives. Any man who would call himself great would meet the critics howl with a battlecry of his own.

: But, it does not matter if everyone "gets it" or not, except if you
: are trying to sell something -- if all you want is to create. An artist
: wants to create.

What of commercial artists? Their job is to communicate, but does having a job make their art less artful? Could you not hold up a fine painting and a fine advertisment and find one who enjoys the advertisment more?

: Maybe you ought to let people speak for themselves. People like Ebert have
: nothing to prove. Their intelligence and experience goes with what they
: say and how they act. Well educated people are simply well educated and
: have nothing to prove. If people disagree with them, then they can debate,
: but they don't have to prove anything win or lose. I will tend to listen
: more to those that know what they are talking about compared to those that
: don't have a clue. This goes without saying, or at least I should not have
: to spell this out.

You only listen to those with great autrhority in your social group. Believe it or not, you listen to whom you think those around you would have you listen to. Conformity is as essential as individualism in society.
