Speeding It Up

But I'm not taking Property : until next semester. :p There are three types of recognized property: 1) Real 2) Personal 3) Intellectual. A 4th, virtual, is being chatted about by academics with computers and too much time and not enough sense. See the Terra Nova Group (Ren Reynolds, Dr. Joshua Fairfield, etc.) and the Themis Group (Dr. Richard Bartle). Thats mainly a topic for a cyberlaw class or advanced intellectual property as its an emerging theory. : Actually, the possiblity for that (actual artistic creation by players WITHIN : an MMORPG) may turn out to be the real answer to Ebert's criticism and : Narc's dilemma. Possibly, eventually there will be an MMORPG that doesn't, : itself, try to be art or try to simulate the unique individual experience : with real choices with consequences that Narc was describing. It could : just be a good enough toolbox/simulation that it would allow the PLAYERS : to provide/create the story/art. (I'm not sure that would work, since, : let's face it, most people's artistic creations are more on the level of : Harlequin romances than good art, but the possibility could be there, and : certainly the variety.) SecondLife is touted as a place for that. I was more interested in how it is not a functioning MMORPG (my thesis being MMORPGs should not qualify as virtual property and not bestow property rights in users) -- as opposed to how its a place for creation, etc. The fact remains that nothing can be created outside of the allowable universe created by the developer. Thus, the developer does set the artistic boundaries. At the most, you would have an argument for IP under collage. I tend to take the more philosophical view on art. I can appreciate folk and fine, personal and public, but there is an element, like with porn, where you know it when you see it -- it is instantly recognizable (and generally socially accepted). : Ugh. My finals are after the new year. There goes MY Holiday break! My holiday break is full of Bar applications, gearing up for moot court nationals, thanking my stars I dont have any law review articles to edit, visiting family, and vacationing across the Atlantic for a bit. -- Pallor
