You're illustrating the social interaction I'm describing. : A curator of a museum is not an authority figure to me. At what point do you : admit that someone who has spent their life studying art would naturally : know more about it, have a deeper appreciation and understanding of it, : etc.? Is the artform of painting so base that even I, who have done : absolutely no formal research on the matter, can declare what is and isn't : art, despite a lifetime spent not researching, not critically thinking, : not learning to appreciate, etc.? Yes. You are born with the authority to declare your opinion as to what is art. The fine print here is, of course, that it is your opinion. : Putting my opinion on the matter at the same level of his is 1) showing my : ignorance, arrogance, or some combination of the two and 2) disrespecting : his life's efforts of gaining knowledge and appreciation of art. Which is why you choose not to voice your opinion of the peice. You do not want to lose influence among your social group, which you have predicted will respect his opinion, so you conform to your social group and do the same. But does this make it art? Does what this man says make a painting art? Is art just a lie, do curators snicker behind our backs that we would be so blind to his trickery? The answer, is no.
