In Response To: Re: Is a rose by any other name... (Brian Graham) : So what role is the gamemaker? The game maker has the role of game creator. A game creator can be an artist too. Where does it say there can be only one artist? In a movie, is not the director an artist, are not the actors, are not the special effects people... do they not need artistic talent to make something creative? : I don't think it's right to say that if someone doesn't like a piece of art,
Well that's your opinion, isn't it. I think you disrespect artists that create because they feel inspired to do so. An artist creates because he or she want to, it is a very personal accomplishment. An artist that merely wants to please others will not be happy as you can never please everyone all the time. An artist can only be happy if they are pleased with their own work. My concern is not with artificial labels of what is or isn't called art. The nature of art is that is takes creativity to create it. Art is not the cookie created from a cookie cutter, it is the life that the baker puts into it with sugar sprinkles and frosting. Art is an extension of the artist, it is very personal. Giving some of yourself and sharing it with others. People that spend years studying art so that they can become better have a mark of greatness because they aren't complacent to just be as good as they are. They inspire themselves to be better and they inspire others too. No critic can take that away fromt them. But it is very personal and a critic's words can hurt deeply in the inside. But, it does not matter if everyone "gets it" or not, except if you are trying to sell something -- if all you want is to create. An artist wants to create. : Saying, "Art is subjective," is a cop-out designed to ignore the
You act as if I care. I have nothing to prove. Maybe you ought to let people speak for themselves. People like Ebert have nothing to prove. Their intelligence and experience goes with what they say and how they act. Well educated people are simply well educated and have nothing to prove. If people disagree with them, then they can debate, but they don't have to prove anything win or lose. I will tend to listen more to those that know what they are talking about compared to those that don't have a clue. This goes without saying, or at least I should not have to spell this out. Ebert makes probably six figures with his job, he is well compensated for his expert analysis and opinion. I make zero figures for mine, in fact, maybe people pay me NOT to talk so much. I have great respect for the man, but does that mean I cannot disagree? No, bring it on... seize life, don't be a wimp. In my opinion, only insecure people have something to prove. : Someone being good at killing someone else does not make them an artist. In
Well, whatever is your point here? I'm not going to say serial killing is good. It would be like saying war is good because it promotes peaceful times. War isn't good, but sometimes it happens. Killing is not good, but sometimes it happens. All I will say is that art is art because of creativity. The artist must use creativity to make art. Something created without creativity is not art to the artist. Art also inspires others to be creative, use imagination. If something inspires imagination then it is art to that person. Art is not always good, art can inspire people to do bad things. Not all art is equal. Those educated in art can unlock or help to interpret the multi-dimensional levels of great pieces of art so that all can appreciate it more. But it would not be the same as little Suzy's finger painting, which might have incredible meaning to her parents but probably would never be displayed in an art museum. Art is often political or has meaning that reflects the times, it is a form of communication as well as for artistic value. Great art is in a class of itself are as great artists. Great artists are rare and exceptional. |
