Is a rose by any other name... | |

In Response To: Rebuttal to Narcogen's Article on Story and Game (Brian Graham) ... still a rose? Call interactive media such as video games whatever you want, but it still doesn't change its nature. Is an entertaining and creative advertisement considered art or is it a tool for selling a product? Is a statue of a leader considered art or is it a symbol of a political state, or a means towards immortalizing the figure head? How much of what we might call art these days once had a political or commercial agenda? Art is in the eye of the beholder. Humans are complex, so is life, there is no need to go further and try to overcomplicate things. If one considers something art and another does, why can't both be correct and both be wrong, why can't it be both? It is relative. In the context of video games, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out why many games don't meet up to the high social standards of those seeking a better world. In real life people have responsibilities and are held accountible for their actions. In a game, a person can escape responsibility for entertainment value. People aren't held accountable in real life for their actions in a game. If someone thought they would get a real ticket for driving too fast in "A Need for Speed" wouldn't that change things? In a movie, one watches life through the eyes of someone else, but like a shadow, you can't tell them what to do. Their mistakes lead to a chain of events that often feeds the intense emotions and drives the plot. You can only watch and imagine. If I were to watch someone else play a video game, wouldn't that be like watching a movie? I could sit back with the lights turned down and a bowl of popcorn to set the mood. What would I see watching someone else play a video game? Would it be art?
