But when a cook creates a masterpiece : multi-course meal of unique design and with his own unique blend of styles : and recipes, its art. : When a game designer creates a normal generic game, its craft. But when the : game deisgner crafts each part uniquely, with love and care, developing : each part with intense passion, each member of the creative team putting : their own elements into it to create a singular masterpiece, the game : becomes art. : That's my view on the matter at least. The intensity, the love, the passion, : and the expression put into creating something makes it art. In that : respect, I do believe games can be art forms. I categorically reject this. Reductio ad absurdum: If I were to express my hate through killing men, that would be a craft. If I turned killing men into a 10-hour ordeal, putting careful symbollisms and ironies into the process to make it that much more awful or destructive, that would be art. If I am angry and put my fist through a wall, that is my expression. But if I'm very angry and put a large hole through the wall, and it was very heartfelt — is that art? Is cooking an art? No, this is silly. The cook is not an artist. Creating something tasty, and doing it skillfully, does not automatically classify something as art. Doing anything skillfully or with passion does not make it art. Just because other people respect your skill at doing something, does not mean you are an artist and that thing you do skillfully is art. Is the swordmaker an artist? If he uses this skill to express something, perhaps something ironic, into a blade — and then the individual blade served as a piece of art, by providing insight to the human condition or the nature of war and why humans make war, then perhaps. But a sword he put a lot of work into, and everyone around him really think it's a kick-ass weapon? It's not art.
