I think he's trying to say that games as a medium don't get the status of art form until at least one example from that medium achieves the status of Art, as he's defined it-- something that uplifts, edifies, etc etc. I don't happen to hold with that definition, but I think it's already been established that we disagree on that point :) The question was also asked, in different places, that since I said that the interactive and storytelling portions of a game can be separate, as in Halo 2, that Games don't distinguish themselves sufficiently from film. I'd say that's true. Think of Halo as a version of an action movie where the movie stops when the action starts, and you take over until you achieve the filmmaker's required result: you win. Then you watch the next bit of movie. That's really more of a variation on film than it is a whole new art form. In terms of Ebert's argument, I think it's just as valid a refutation; if games are hardly distinguishable from films, and films can be art, then so are games. My assertion was that games, because of their interactivity rather than despite it, have the potential to evolve into a new kind of storytelling and become a more distinct medium for art. I admit that this hasn't happened yet-- but the fact that it hasn't yet doesn't mean it can't, and even if it never happens, it doesn't make games not an art form, it just means it's a form that hasn't reached its potential.
