So, what if the Halos use the Flood's instantaneous communications method, but amplify it somehow, so that they send out some kind of "psychic blast" that fries the brains and/or nervous systems of any sentient creatures in range - the Flood's food - and maybe also the Flood themselves within range? But to do this, maybe they needed the Flood themselves, and this explains why they had to keep samples of the Flood, and the laboratory rooms in the 343 Guilty Spark level - they were working out ways of triggering this blast by torturing Infection Forms perhaps? If that is the case, then how did Installation 04a work, unless the Ark had Infection Forms as part of the "ingredients" for building a Halo? :) I think Louis is right - there is probably no "canon" explanation of how the Halos work lurking in the Halo Story Bible - they just work. Was it Arthur C. Clarke that said that any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic? Ciarán.
