Certainly we see in the Graphic Novel that beyond the Pure Form Flood, there can be infected wildlife as well. Perhaps that wildlife is not sentient, but remember it's still biomass that can be accumulated. The Ranged Pure Form uses the parts of bodies left on the battlefield to form itself with. It's extremely likely that the 'missiles' it shoots at you are bone fragments from your buddy not long ago fighting alongside you. Eww. I imagine the body of the original Gravemind was physically destroyed and could no longer keep itself intact, but through a mechanism we don;t understand, I'm pretty sure from all dialog we've heard that the long-term Flood memory was not eradicated in the original Halo blast...the new Gravemind is well aware of what transpired 100,000 years ago.
