In Response To: Re: A little speculation *Spoilers* Part 1 (Dubble.utoo) : It makes sense that the gravemind is killed by the array, but in that case. : Where did this new gravemind come from? Is it native to this galaxy? And : if so, what biomass did it have to construct itself with. Or did this new : gravemind originate from another galaxy? I think the flood was indexed, and then recreated for study on (at least) the Halo 4 installation, where 343 guilty spark mentioned them being taken there for study AFTER the first firing. (or more flood was gathered from a neighboring sector, but that would suggest that sentients brought them there, and if so.. where are they now (unless they went back to the Ark and live on that planet shown at the end of the legendary end credits) One thing that isn't being referenced here is that the flood have more than a hive mentality, they have a shared one. According to the terminal dialogues between Medicant Bias (MB)and the Gravemind, the gravemind (LF) was talking about how they all see with one set of eyes, etc.. the gravemind is what the terminals referred to as "consolidated" flood, not a separate entity/leader. In other words, the flood IS the gravemind IS the flood. It's a part of it, but not even close to being a "compartment" of it. Was it the same gravemind? due to it's nature, that's not relevant, and approximately the same as pulling a droplet out of a lake, dropping it back into the lake, and then extracting another drop, asking if it might be the same droplet. It's logically not the same drop because it's a temporary manisfestation, that re-mixed into the lake as it was dropped into it, but it IS the same lake. To me, I think the Halos were covered in livestock and stuff that the first Halo blast later wiped out. To study the flood, they may have permitted a limited supply of food to exist there for controlled feeding, in an attempt to figure-out it's weaknesses, etc. It's hard to study a dead sentient being/race for thousands of years. The snow covered levels in Halo 1 were atmospheric defences against the flood.. presumably making the ground unable to mutate to what it looks like in "isolation".
