In Response To: Re: A little speculation *Spoilers* Part 1 (discopete019) : the major theory on that, is that all the flood left after consuming the : entire galaxy. the reason they left was to either A) infect the universe : or B) gain new hosts for the combat forms(and proteins to make more pure : forms) because you can tell the forms are rotting away just by looking at : them. The Gravemind may have a biological memory of the rings, remember : he's the second one to manifest in our galaxy. the first one was destroyed : when the rings were fired. the rings firing killed the gravemind, and all : the flood forms hosts. the other flood (pureforms and infection since they : were made of assorted flood spores and various tissues and body parts) : without guidance tried to behave in their feral state just after they were : in their spacefaring state. this caused the ships to crash into eachother, : and also be destroyed by offensive bias. the flood that the forerunners : could preserve where then stored on the remaining halos, probably for : study on a way to cure people of it so as to help incase more came. when : the rings were fired they went into dormancy so as to reawaken when more : food would arrive. Very nice, I can confirm that the flood was stored on the halos to study them after the last firing of the halos. 343 came right out and directly stated that in the Library level (Halo 2). My impression was that the samples were gathered from whatever galaxy they originated from, not stored and frozen during the ring firing. Part of that comes from 343 saying that the masterchief was smart to have an envoronment suit, for when the flood began altering the environment. Apparently, the forerunners were able to watch them for awhile, prior to the big outbreak. This might also explain why the Elites seem to have a functional knowledge of the flood. Even calling the heretic a "Floodbait" in halo 2, and then revealing knowledge again in the discussion with Lord Hood in Halo 3 regarding the ability of the flood to spread. They were studied, and on the heretic level, the Oracle states:
This suggests to me that the Flood were known of before they became a true risk. Perhaps the forerunners in this galaxy were watching them wipe out stuff in the next galaxy and said "Holy crap.. we'd better figure-out a way to fight them off." Then they retrofitted the mining facility, and perhaps the flood threatened to escape from it, and the stricter protocols were established. At that point they still had no better methods than to starve the flood, so they set-up the rings with the updated containment protocols, and continued study of them on the rings. Perhps they even attacked the flood on it's home turf in the next galaxy? Maybe that's why the covenant worships them, assuming that's where the covenant originates from? Maybe the forerunners helped contain them?
