In Response To: On the Relationship Between Halos and Flood *long* (elpolloguapo) I've always believed that Bungie has been vague about how the rings do what they do... because they never bothered to work it out themselves. :) And I've ALSO always believed that they took more than a few pieces of the operation from Chris Rowley's Starhammer series. http://halostory.bungie.org/rowley.vang.html The Starhammer worked by creating a gravitational disturbance in the center of its target - this actually seems unlikely to be how the rings kill, given descriptions like the death of MB's crew. The Starhammer 'worked instantaneously over any distance' - this seems critical for the rings, if they're going to stand a chance at being effective. (If you're covering an area with a radius of 25,000 light years, and you're limited to lightspeed for the actual effects... it's gonna take a long time to do your work.) Rowley never explained that bit - and I don't think Bungie ever will, either.
