In Response To: Re: A little speculation *Spoilers* Part 1 (mendicantbias00) Piecing together bits and fragments of this story, I think Cortana's statement ("Halo doesn't kill the Flood, it kills their food.") is more figurative that what the Two Betrayals cutscene makes us think. Please tell me if I have missed a major hint somewhere along the line. In the fight between Medicant and Offensive, Offensive armed the Halo Array, which rendered all of Medicants ships useless. Thus, I think this speaks for the Flood being affected by the Halo pulse as well. The meaning of Cortana's quote can probably be interlinked to the statement from the Elite Commander on how a single spore can eradicate an entire civilization. Another possible slant is the likely extragalactic origin of the Flood, indicating that the damage is more local, as noone has any knowledge of whether there is an intergalactic Gravemind communications network, which could be a possibility given the origin. On the topic of Installation 04, the first time destroying the ring killed the parasite and there was little consideration of spores, vessels etc. In Halo 1, I assume all Flood was killed. If the firing of 04 in its incomplete state means various instances of overload, it is not too much of a stretch to assume a normal detonation, which in turn destroys the Ark with all the remaining Flood occupying it. (I find it likely that some are left on Installation 05 though, but that is outside the scope of this discussion.) Seeing how conventional heating has worked rather well, both on 04 the first time, in Africa in H3, and the way Bungie let the Flood melt away under the Flamethrower and firebombs, I see it as a safe bet that normal heat is enough to kill them. The thing that then makes it hard to kill is the borderline omnipresence of the Flood, and the practical implications of applying enough heat to sterilize their entire infested areas, coupled with the high rate of reinfestation once it reaches a spacefaring civilization. Ergo, firing the unfinished 04 would likely have the desired effect no matter what, and it destroys the Gravemind, which is a major plus as we do not currently have information on how long its formation would take.
