I used to believe that - that this was simply a war of rich versus poor, but that does not explain hot spots such as what was Yougoslavia. A lot of this is indoctrinated hate, passed on to us by our parents and reinforced by local perceptions of events. Why do the Irish still carry a grudge against the Brittish? - and I'm not referring to Northern Ireland. The invasion of Ireland happened hundreds of years ago. What most Irish don't know is that the Celts once were the menacing invaders of much of Europe - so this is a form of selective collective memory. What I'm getting at is that if you take a child and teach him (or her) hatred of someone else from throughout their growth and development, the hatred will be a part of their very being, and very difficult to expunge. So, Sock, it's not simply a matter of us stopping doing what we are doing - not that we should ever stop being a becon for freedum and democracy - but we would have to cease to exist to satisfy the hunger of those who hate us. I agree that we have made many, many mistakes and too often served our own misguided selfinterests, but we cannot satisfy the dreams of the fundamentalists without surrendering our most cherished ideals - and I'd rather live with terror than do that, as I think would most.
