In Response To: Re: Rubicon Volunteers - Science Stands Alone (Inverted Sock Puppet) : I've also heard that only about 3 or 4 people have actually been
Let's not let this degrade into a flame war, and I'm not saying that I support Bush's approach to the handling of the POW's, but let's remember who we're talking about. These aren't boy scouts defending their land. The Taliban was the most repressive regime on the planet, recognized by only two other countries in the world. Even the vast majority of the Arab world did not recognize the legitimacy of the Taliban. These people routinely executed people in a public arena for minor infractions and even for things that the rest of the world would consider religious beliefs. They did not allow women to receive an education, let alone hold a job. Not that there aren't other countries that practice some of these things, but the Taliban did so to an extreme not previously imaginable. More significanlty, President Bush correctly espoused a policy that those who harbor terrorism must be considered to be terrorists themselves. I don't usually find myself agreeing with Bush, but this is a legitimate point. In virtually any country, if you voluntarily offer safe harbor to a fugitive from the law, you are considered to be an accomplice. In the case of Al-Queda and the Taliban, there is no question that the Taliban had provided a safe haven for terrorists and even permitted the use of training camps for terrorism. It doesn't get more flagrant than this. The terrorists who hijacked airplanes and flew them and their passengers into the WTC and the pentagon trained in Afganistan. Collectively, they killed more civilians than in all other terrorist acts in modern history, combined. Although we could certainly argue about the effectiveness of the War on Terror in deterring future terrorist attacks, just as we could the Israeli tatics in the West Bank, I think that there is substantial legitimacy for the U.S. actions in Afganistan and we have every right to detain members of the Taliban who fought against our troops. Where we go from here, however, is a good question. |
