(Agent Cletus) Cletus, There is no doubt that science can be perverted and used to justify anything, but this is not science - it is a distortion of science. We all know that statistics, for example, can be used to make people believe anything. We even had a discussion here in an earlier thread about the serious dangers of dihydrogen oxide - everything stated was true and factual, but the interpretation of the data was distorted to make people believe that water is a toxic substance and should be banned. Science tells us that water causes drowning (toxic if inhaled), corrosion (rust) and physical dependence (life) - these are scientifically provable facts. Science is neutral, however, as to whether or not it should be banned. Remove all water from earth and all life will die - this is based on the scientific evidence. Science doesn't care if there is water or not. There is no debating what science tells us here. Where there is subjectivity is with the use or misuse of scientific information. In this case, the perpetrators of this hoax failed to provide all of the scientific evidence. Add water to a plant and it grows, withdraw water and it dies. Same goes for all life forms. All of us who have devoted our lives to science know that it can be perverted by politics, self-interest and greed. People fail to publish all the data. People deliberately introduce a bias into a study. Sometimes people just plain make mistakes. The bottom line is that the underlying science is sound, and it is neutral. In a well designed study that applies the scientific method, an hypothesis will be supported or not by a given probability - nothing more, and nothing less. For evolution, the probability is on the order of 99.999%, give or take a few thousandths. There is a big difference between science, and the interpretation of science, and that is what is being debated here. Not to put anyone down, but let's not confuse the two.
