	In Response To: Re: My bad (Agent Cletus) That makes what you're saying a bit clearer; your original post seemed to oversimplify the entire evolution/creationism (science/religion) issue. Science, in its purest form, is based on collection and analysis of hard evidence in order to support or disprove a theory. Religion, in its purest form, is based on belief. Therefore, as Ben said in his post, science is concerned strictly with what is, whereas religion is concerned with what may be. The result of this is that a rational scientific interpretation of solid data must always take precedence over religious belief. If science has conclusively (or at least acceptably) proven that man evolved from apes, then man evolved from apes regardless of what is written in Genesis. Of course, that doesn't suggest that all religious beliefs are necessarily false; it just means that everything in the Bible can't be taken literally. The function of religion is not to explain how the world works; rather, it is to address ethics and metaphysics, and how it addresses these issues is for the most part insignificant. Any religious zealot who thinks that God creating the universe in six days is a core religious belief to be defended at all costs really has his priorities misplaced. Likewise, any scientist who denounces religion as worthless since it has no tangible basis is ignoring the benefits of religious belief; even though it cannot be proved that there was a Jesus of Nazareth, if His [apocryphal] teachings inspire someone to feed the hungry and help the homeless then they have had a positive effect, whether or not He had actually existed. (That's not to say that all atheists (or all Christians) are in the wrong, just those who criticize the other camp for not being under their camp's jurisdiction.) Apologies for keeping this thread from dying; I just felt that I had to post something, even if it was mainly a rehash of what other people have already said.
