In Response To: Oh please, no. (psychophan7) : It would absolutely : work, in theory, to have both aspects of the game balanced separately from : the other. Yes, I'e seen multiplayer fans complain that multiplayer is nerfed to cater for campaign but I have often felt that the opposite was also true. I lost the M6D because of those pesky multiplayers and their balance/fairness winges. :-( And then there were changes to the banshee to stop it being overpowering in multiplayer, etc, etc, blah, blah. I don't think we need an exhaustive list to make the point. You need to compromise when there is a shared set of rules. There is a greater likelihood that someone gets the short end of the stick. : The problem with it is that players typically do not restrict
Halo changes between every game. When a new Halo comes out we adjust. It doesn't take long. If campaign and multiplayer are allowed to separate further then we get two new games with each release. Fortunately they still share a lot of code and designer resources in common so it is not twice the work. There is the additional benefit that Bungie has experience in and code for implementing the alternate features. For example: health packs and regenerating health, Scorpion with coaxial gun and Scorpion with separate machine gunner (maybe Forge could switch Scorpion types in custom games). As a thought: could all these differences be customizable? Bungie could setup maps as they see fit, with default health (regenerating), a certain types of vehicles and weapons. People could edit maps in Forge or Bungie could alter map parameters in maps released for specialized game hoppers (whatever they are). You can drop an object into Forge to change the way things are rendered: you have normal, sepia tones, juicy, etc. Why not drop in a health type object? A fall damage object? : It would be a boon for multiplayer if it could be balanced separately, great
: While I love the idea, I won't support it. It would require more time
I'd let them decide how difficult it would be. Its a trade off. They must build two sandboxes but each sandbox may be easier to build and better to play in than a mixed sandbox. Also the sandboxes are not two entirely separate things, they share many features and the company is experienced with building sandboxes like the campaign sandbox (Halo CE) and the multiplayer sandbox (they have built several, take your pick) I understand that you are saying that the extra effort will guarantee poor results. I'm not convinced that this is inevitable. : A great multiplayer experience
I don't see that either of those things must happen. I suspect that once freed from the constraints created by trying to accommodate conflicting demands from the two game types, the end results will be better campaigns and better multiplayer experiences. Why would Bungie be forced to hack something together quickly? The two sandboxes are not double the work because they share a lot in common. Its also helpful that Bungie has shipped games with oober pistols and games without. They have shipped games with the two different health types, etc. They are experienced in the behaviors of both types of sandbox. : Too long for you? Couldn't be bothered to read it?
I didn't know that this happened with h2, what is the evidence that this happened? Anyway, to avoid getting bogged down in abstracts: I will list the kinds of differences that I am thinking of. Then we can see how bad it would be. As an extra point: if the different weapon and vehicle types look different from each other then the player tell one type from another. They can be given different names. We already have this with many of the UNSC weapons. Here is a top level view: Weapons
Vehicle types
Health type
If anyone wants more detail about weapon/vehicle types then reply with your own lists. I just thought of duel wielding. Does anyone want DW in any sandbox?
