In Response To: Re: So you guys want specifics on game design eh.. (Avateur) : Out of curiosity, where do you put games like CoD4/MW2 into your : casual/hardcore analysis? Or RPGs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age? I get : that the focus is mostly on Halo, and you like using examples from : StarCraft and a few other games, but these games are also extremely : successful and attract as much as if not more attention than Halo. I'd probably elaborate on this more if I didn't just lay down nearly five thousand words in another post, but I'd drop CoD in there with Halo. I haven't played it enough to explore how deep the gameplay is, but I'd imagine its somewhere on the same level. I'd have to analyze CoD, determine where I feel it lies in terms of complexity (value judgment, yes), and determine where I'd rank it among other games (I'd argue it's possible to be somewhat objective in the measurement of complexity; whether that's good or bad is still a value judgment). For example, in a comparison between these shooters across platforms, as far as "pro" FPS games go, I'm of the stance that PC FPS games provide greater depth (as the execution elements of play are better handled through tighter controls). As a result, they would land closer to the more complex, "hardcore," side. As far as the RPGs go, my experience is limited, but at first glance I'd say they place greater, if not all, emphasis on the strategic elements of play. As for where they land on the casual/hardcore continuum? That would require an in-depth analysis of the complexity involved; how "deep" things are (I think I get to say "deep" just this once and not have to clarify). In any case, I have nebulous preconceptions regarding my opinion of each game, but I honestly haven't given them as much of a chance to prove their worth as I have say, ODST. The hardcore gamer's time with a game is intimate and limited.
