Re: Can Flood Infect Machines?
Posted By: MJOLNIR7 <kev524@gwu.edu>Date: 5/8/08 6:46 p.m.

: Really. Having 'the power of perception by the senses' and having the ability
: to say "I think, therefore I am" are so wildly different that
: suggesting that equating them (as you have) is absurd.

: Rats have the power of perception by their senses. (Though I'd concede that
: they're well below the 'sufficient size' threshold the Flood needs.) I
: would not, under any circumstances, try to argue that they're self-aware.

: The Flood requires a body sufficiently integrated that it can take over a
: nervous system and 'disconnect' the host brain from physical control,
: without being left with a useless husk. That pretty much covers any animal
: on this planet. The 'sufficient size' requirement is actually more
: limiting than the 'sentience' one.

: (Bungie has never actually laid out how the Flood works - but they seemed
: close enough to the Vang that I proposed a set of rules for Flood takeover
: mechanics back when Halo came out, and sent it along to Bungie for
: approval. I knew they wouldn't specifically confirm my ideas, or answer
: direct questions, but I asked them to yank anything I speculated on that
: was outright wrong. They yanked nothing.)

I dont know why I bothered, (just to put my own foot in my mouth haha), but I did some poking around on the subject and it appears I'm a jerk. Although I thought them to be one and the same Sentience is not sapience are not at all. Apparently this is where I was getting confused and like I said at the end of my last post I really am sorry I have just had this understanding of it for years now...and well, it doesn;t matter cause Im an idiot. Allow me to provide the evidence of my clear lack of consciousness though-lol:

The encyclopedia Britannica describes the "general" meaning of Sentience as "the ability to feel or perceive subjectively." Still not satisfied I decided to push the limits and see how far I could get my foot up there. It was difficult but luckily for me I found this definition of sentience in Merriam, " feeling or sensation as distinguished from perception and thought." Clearly that is not the same as self-awareness and clearly I was wrong.

Still I don't think it was that 'absurd' to have confused sentient with sapient considering the two are commonly used as synonyms. But again I have a shoe in my mouth right not so it is kind of hard to think let alone type lol.

Hey at least Im willing to admit when I look like a jackass unlike many, that something...or its just that more pathetic. Either way I formally concede to you good sir and will now go and take my embarrassment out on some innocent civilians in GTA4.
