I know I've mentioned this before, but with all this recent discussion on the Gravemind and his capabilities, I'm firmly convinced that Bungie modeled him after Eric Cartman's Dawson's Creek Trapper Keeper Ultra Keeper Futura S 2000. Like the gravemind, Cartman's trapper keeper could assimilate with a wide variety of people, electronic devices, cars, weapons. And like the Gravemind, it became a large tentacled blob with vast powers.
And I don't think it's any coincidence that Microsoft released the first Halo game exactly one year to the day after the Trapper Keeper episode aired. Sure Gravemind didn't show up until Halo 2, but we saw the Flood's assimilative capabilities with the whole Keyes incident didn't we?
