I think Jilly was trying to make the point that even if the female marines were ultra-femine, it would have absolutely nothing to do with their ability to be effective killing machines. I could be wrong though. Being one way doesn't preclude a person from being another way as well. The thing about stereotypes is that they're generally (grossly) true, or at least truish. They often describe tendencies. The trouble comes when short-sighted or close-minded people believe that a given stereotype is 100% true, or is 100% of the story. That leads to backlash, in which people generalize to say all stereotyping is bad. People have to be ready to think actively about every concept they come across. When people get lazy, they rely on stereotypes to define their universe, and end up looking out at life through moron-colored glasses. Should female marines be feminine or masculine? I really don't care as long as they kill well. Yes, maybe they should tend towards masculine as perhaps less feminine females might have a greater tendency to enter into less traditional areas such as the military. But in truth, it would be a bell curve. The same goes for the males, too. All the world is a bell curve.
