In Response To: Gender in Halo 2 (response to DanteThePoet) LONG (Cody Miller) : I just found DanteThePoet's critique of gender usage in Halo 2 , and thought : that is was actually a pretty fascinating topic. I was suprised that the : thread wasn't longer. Seeing as how he wanted feedback, I thought I'd : chime in with my own thoughts. Dante seemed to give the game a glowing : review when it came to gender equality and stereotypes. I'm going to throw : out my thoughts about the three females he analyzes (Cortana, Miranda, and : the female marines.) : At first it would seem that women are given equal status in the Halo
Ive never been in the military, much less in real combat. I could imagine, however, that during times of real combat, you know, the kind where you could be dead 3 minutes from now, that the mindset of 'we got a job to do' probably takes a mental front seat over and above procreation.
We never rly saw any female marines at ease, such as in a rec room. Thus, there was apparently no mechanism for 'character building' to see what they may be like, in say, non combat conditions. Let's face it. If you're entire planet is under immediate threat from wierd looking aliens in technologically superior machinery, the last thing you are going to think about is chasing tail. As I said, I have no military experience, but I might suppose that, hypothetically, if you were to 'hit on' a female during times of active combat, that you are not only putting yourself at risk of dying, you are risking your whole squads integrity as well. There may be arguable times in Campaign (such as in the elevator) where you seem to not be in immediate jeopardy, but shouldnt you always stay frosty, since the elevators ride will probably end soon? I believe that they scripted their roles well. The only suggestion would be a little more character building, in particular, during non-combat portions of campaign, if any. Think of it this way: Say one of the female marines' lines were flirty. Would that be the logical choice? Would anyone do that in REAL combat? Or would it make the game seem campy and poorly written?
