In Response To: Enkidu flames and kudos HERE, please. (Anton P. Nym (aka Steve))
That is to say, I missed so much of the revelatory experience of Enkidu because my computer suxxorz. Luckily for me, the part I was involved in was the juicy beggining, when the forum wasn't even sure what the meaning of the terminal identification was, or whether we were dealing with one protagonist or more.
My favorite type of fiction is a mysterious narrative, where the story is good enough to stand alone, but readers are at least as "in the dark" as the characters, perhaps even after reading the story more than once. You not only managed to write such a story, but you crafted it in such a way that made the understanding of the plot a community exercise.
Every time a new terminal came out, I couldn't just read it. In order to understand it as fully as I was able to and wanted to, I had to visit the forum. The nature of mythological, historical, and scientific references. Speculation on metaphors and allegories. Debate over our protagonist's nature, the fate of Enkidu, and the Lebanon's crew. What a particular terminal was describing, and what that meant had happened since the last terminal, or several previous terminals, were questions that couldn't begin to be answered unless I popped in on the forum for a lively debate. Not only was I constantly feeding new information, ideas, and opinions into my evolving understanding of the story being unveiled, but a crucial part of that understanding, and the story, was the community itself.
I never really thought the Enkidu terminals were from Bungie. I'm such a skeptic that I even question the acurracy of the Flood information here on HBO (sorry Louis). So once I read the second terminal released, I realized that you were going to tell us a story, and was basically convinced that Enkidu wasn't from Bungie. Of course, I was wrong. You weren't telling us a story, you were forcing us to tell ourselves and each other a story. And that tapped in to the nature of a community that Bungie purposely made itself a part of and made a part of itself. It might not be cannon, but it sure is Bungie.
The Enkidu terminals weren't and aren't just a way to "waste some time", they are a way to spend some time giving your Brain some entertainment and exercise. So not only did I get to be involved in a great interactive narrative community experience, I was also helping to stave off the onset of the signs of mental aging. I bet even Louis would have felt younger if he had been in the light like the rest of us.
Kudos, huzzah, Wort wort wort!, and all the rest. Truely an experience worth being a part of.
