In Response To: Re: Enkidu flames and kudos HERE, please. (Tarrsk) : It never was implied that Bungie made this. So it had a bungie.org URL. That
Umm you have said numerous times that it was implied lol. Remember these lines- "If Steve had revealed Enkidu to be a fanfic from day 1, do you honestly believe that all of this would have come to pass? The ignorance of the readers was a NECESSARY part of this work." "Of course he intended it. It's part of what made the whole thing so fun. Do you think the Cortana letters would have been nearly as interesting if Nate had put "HEY GUYS I WROTE THIS AND I WORK AT BUNGIE!!!!!" on top of each one? Neither do I." I think that's enough to prove my point. Yes they never said "This is from Bungie" but they never said it was fan fiction. It also resembled something Bungie would do (cryptic messages from a rampant AI). It was on Bungie.org which I could honestly see hosting something like this from Bungie. And Louis's initial post hinted at the possibility. All these contributed to the plausible belief that this could be from Bungie. Louis knew this, he's not going to tell me he didn't. It was interned to leave that possibility in the readers mind. As I said in my Blog post this would be the same as me Photoshoping a Halo 2 image and putting in up on BGH. I wouldn't have to say it's official for some people to think it was. That would be misleading to the readers of the site and just plain wrong. I really don't view this situation as any better. : Yes, there was. Willing suspension of disbelief by the audience was a crucial
Ok I see you have gone back to your original statement. Whats wrong with it is that first of all your wasting peoples time by misleading them. If they want to read some reportedly cool fan fiction that's fine but tell them what they are taking the time to speculate, don't pull a Bush on them and send them looking for something that's not there. Also if Bungie tries to do something similar people are going to scrutinize it. They may not just play along like before because they have better things to do with their time then be a pawn in a ploy to gain attention for someone's creative expression. : No, the story would have stood on its own perfectly well without the
Ok great, I got no problem with it entertaining you or anyone else. As I said it does seems to have done a lot of good. It just could have done a lot of good and been honest about what it was to the reader. Had I taken the time to read this it would have only been because it contained actual Halo 2 story line info. I'm a busy guy and don't feel like wasting my time reading Fan Fiction because to be honest I'm just not interested in it. Should I or any other person get mislead simply so it can help make the authors story better? I don't think so. : Look, sometimes the WAY a story is told is as important as the plot/
So it would be ok then for say ABC to make a movie that resembles it's news and run it in the same time slot? Lets say the movie claims a Nuclear bomb is in a populated city. Would that be an ok thing to do provided they never "say" it's real or official? It sure would add to the movies impact but does that really make it a good thing to do? Now granted that's 10 million times worse then what happened here but it's along the same lines. : Simply put: Alone, the Enkidu story would be in the upper echelon of online
I guess good for him then. : Nobody was "lied to." Neither Louis nor the author EVER explicitely
No not lied to (which is why I said lied to OR mislead). People where mislead as evident from the reader reaction. Even you were mislead as you admitted thinking it might be real. : Of course it's "ok" for a site to mislead its fans every once in a
It was April fools for christ sake and the situation he presented wasn't plausible. This on the other hand was very believable. Just look around if you don't believe me. How many people here alone weren't sure? And again you admitted "falling for it". Did you really fall for the April fools thing? Doubt it. And no it's not ok to mislead your sites fans in such a believable manner, well not if you want to keep them all at least. : You're free to express your opinions on this matter, like anyone else. As am
: I still don't understand why you keep talking about the "fun of the
The storyline I am refearing to is the Halo one which I know and have read. It doesn't take a genious to know the gist of Enkidu and to know that due to it people are thinking a lot more about the Halo story line. : An "upfront" approach would have been simpler, sure. No confusion,
I think you could have still speculated and searched the web to figure out the meaning. The way you talk the story would be nothing if it's wasn't misleading as if the only reason people cared was because this might have some real Halo 2 facts...oh wait that would mean people wasted their time on this due to a misleading approach. Thanks for backing up my argument. :D : You simply aren't understanding. For those of us who enjoyed the Enkidu
Well YOU don't care and that's great. But what about the people who did? Don't they at least deserve an apology? I don't that would be too much to ask for here. : First of all, HBo specifically states on the bottom of the page that they are
How many times has Bungie worked with HBO? Lets see, at least 5 times off the top of my head. Louis is good friends with the Bungie staff, we all know that. Bungie does stuff with HBO that they don't with any other site. It's not hard at all to believe that if Bungie were to do something like this they might use Bungie.org space. : Secondly, the Enkidu updates in the daily news were never written in the same
Yes he is but if Bungie was trying to do as they did with the Cortana letters it's Plausible that he would go along with it. Also with that logic why didn't he just say that these were not from Bungie? I mean why end the honesty now? : Lastly, RvB don't leave their origins ambiguous because that's not an
You don't get out much do you :P : I guess a fundamental difference between us is that, whereas you choose to
Right, we see the same thing two separate ways and that's ok. I won't fault you for not being upset. But I think we can agree that these were purposely misleading, and that while it wasn't intended as a negative thing some people certainly could take it that way. |
