A sentiment I keep hearing over and over is "It's too bad this was JUST a fan fiction" and "I wish this was really from Bungie." That sounds somewhat negative, but I think that in actuality it is the ultimate compliment. This was so good that we DESPERATELY wanted it to be some part of the actual story of Halo 2. That is HUGE. Steve, you so completely nailed the spirit and the sense of the Bungie universe that even when "Fan Fiction" showed up in the tags we refused to accept the possibility. I could sense people, all over the world, sitting in front of blank tv screens, clutching their Xbox controllers and just DYING to visit Frigid.

I would risk comparing this to "The War of the Worlds" radio broadcast simply because the mystery of the source contributed greatly to the overall experience. Enkidu became a game of discovery and research that was wonderful to participate in. I'm sure High School history and literature teachers everywhere were delightfully shocked when students would approach them with questions about "Inferno" and "The Epic of Gilgamesh." And don't forget the physics teachers and professors...
"I have a question Mr. Smith."
"About tonight's homework?"
"No... I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about String Theory and/or the concept of the 11 dimensions."

And what did this do to their impression of video games in general? When asked "Why do you want to know?" by dumbfounded educators, surely the pupils regailed them with stories of ancient technology in distant galaxies and Artificial Intelligence and the use of literary references to drive a story, and "oh yeah, it's cool when you stick a grenade to an Elite." Maybe they won't be so critical of the time "these kids today" spend in front of their gaming systems anymore.

This is getting longer than I was planning but I would wrap up by saying that, if nothing else, Enkidu reminds us of why we love Bungie games so much; because if you took away the game completely we would still be addicted to the story. Enkidu was like the cutscenes without the gameplay and it WORKED. I didn't have to think too hard to see the levels in between. It also made me jump back into the Marathon games I had in a drawer and I am a better person because of it. :D

Oh, and BTW. Don't count Enkidu out yet. All Bungie has to do is say, "Ok, this is now a part of the Halo timeline," for it to be so. In the Star Wars universe, fan fiction is regularly adopted into the Canon, so why not Enkidu? I would love to see an Enkidu egg somewhere in H2. That would validate it for those select few who feel "betrayed" (gag!)
